Features include:
•2.7m high ceilings throughout except meals room which is 2-storey
•Highlight windows above Meals room for improved natural light into Kitchen
•Large double sliders in Meals room to emphasize “indoor-outdoor” ambience.
•Polished steel beam with Frameless glass balustrade along front of mezzanine
•Steel and timber shade structures over most of the main windows
•Internal concrete walls for thermal mass
Design complexity
The main design challenge was to produce a modern clean-lined appearance without a traditional hip or gabled roof as the main focus and with fascias and gutters hidden from view as much as possible. This was achieved by hiding a low pitched roof behind a parapet wall which wraps around the whole house. Box gutters were designed behind the parapets to emphasise the clean lines. The problem of getting air conditioning ducting to all rooms was solved by incorporating a skillion roof from front to back which houses the main plant as well as providing a central visual feature to the front elevation. The skillion also houses the Mezzanine/ Loft area.
Construction
The house is constructed from specially designed concrete tilt up panels. The panels are 225 thick overall and incorporate 50mm thick insulation between 2 slabs of concrete. The high degree of internal thermal mass contributes to an excellent energy rating and sustainable outcomes.
The internal walls are mainly constructed from 100mm thick tilt-up panels except round wet areas which have standard stud frames to allow for plumbing. All the surfaces are sheeted with plasterboard.
The roof is constructed with parallel chord trusses and metal deck roofing
The floor a 230mm thick reinforced slab which means separate footings are not required. This cuts down on labour and materials.
The wallsaround the skillion are standard timber framed with metal panel cladding
Materials
All external concrete walls are rendered with ‘Granosite’. To give visual relief, the front wall incorporates a timber panel which replaces the outside skin of concrete.
To give visual texture to the exterior, the walls around the skillion are aluminium sandwich panels except for the bulkhead section which has colorbond custom orb metal cladding
The skillion roof is colorbond metal deck with standard metal fascias and gutters.
